TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS

 What are my options?

The following instructions apply to traffic violations only. If you are charged with a crime, you must appear before the judge on the date and time listed on your citation.

You may exercise one of the following options on or before your court appearance date listed at the bottom of your citation:

Option 1.  Enter a plea of Guilty and pay the base fine.

Personal appearance

By mail

Pay by debit/credit card over the phone

Option 2.  Enter a plea of Guilty or No Contest with an explanation to the judge.

The clerk of the court does not have the authority to take your explanation into consideration when imposing a fine. Please submit your plea and explanation to the judge. You can do this by doing one of the following:

Mail your plea of “Guilty” or “No Contest”, written explanation, and payment of the base fine to:
Shady Cove Municipal Court, PO Box 1210, Shady Cove, OR 97539
Appear before the judge in person on the date and time listed on your citation.
A plea of “Guilty” or “No Contest” does result in a conviction and will appear on your driving record.

Option 3.  Enter a plea of Not Guilty and request a trial.

You have the right to plead “Not Guilty”. You can either enter the plea by mail or in person. Upon entry of a “Not Guilty” plea, the Clerk of the Court will schedule a trial date for you. Please note that if you are found guilty at trial, you will not be offered the option of traffic school and the conviction will be entered on your driving record.

Option 4:  Attend traffic school and pay an additional fee.

Shady Cove Municipal Court offers a traffic school program through Jackson County. If you are concerned about your driving record, you may consider this option. However, there is an additional fee involved, but the violation will be removed from your record upon completion of the program. For more information please investigate the Traffic School and Safety Belt Program
